I’m Going to Frank’s Chop Shop

Rob Needing a Haircut

Hey folks, it’s-a-me, Mario… oh, um, I mean Rob. More specifically, it’s my crazy hair. Generally speaking I get a haircut once a month, and it keep it rather short. In this picture, I’m coming up on two months, sans trim.

You see, I had a guy who cut my hair on a regular basis, a nice Irish fellow by the name of Thomas Downes. He owned and operated the now defunct Aisling Thomas Salon in the Meatpacking District and I was always pleased with the results. Unfortunately for me, Thomas moved back to Ireland and I’m well on my way to becoming Tom Hanks in Cast Away (or Forrest Gump for that matter).

So the search for the perfect haircut begins anew. I can’t say that I’ve done extensive research, but Frank’s Chop Shop was awarded the Best Cheap Men’s Haircut by New York Magazine in their Best of New York 2007 feature.

“It’s more than just a gimmick, though; the cuts are good, satisfying a clientele that ranges from downtown skateboarders and graffiti celebrities taking advantage of head barber Mr. Bee’s freestyle design talents to investment bankers and professors looking for the full-service hot-towel treatment and straight-edge-razor shave. Wu-Tang Clan’s U-God and GZA along with actor Rick Gonzalez have all been lured in by the Chop Shop’s singular combination of old-school service and new-school skills.”

Now, I’m neither a skateboarder, nor a banker but for $25 - $40 I’m going to give Frank’s Chop Shop a shot at sculpting a masterpiece out of the raw material that is my hair. Here’s what it looks like now (multiple angles for your viewing pleasure).

Check back later this week for the after pics. Make a flip book while you’re at it. In the meantime, any suggestions for where to get your haircut in NYC? Just in case things don’t go so well at Frank’s Chop Shop.
